PADI Assistant Instructor
The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the next professional step after Divemaster and the first major part of the Instructor Development Course (IDC). At this level, you begin transitioning from dive leader to dive educator — developing teaching skills, instructional confidence, and the ability to supervise and guide students more independently.
What you need
Course structure
Certification
The beginning of professional dive instruction.
The Assistant Instructor level marks an important transition within professional diving. Instead of focusing only on guiding certified divers, you begin learning how to teach, evaluate, supervise, and organize training activities within the PADI system.
This course develops communication, leadership, and instructional awareness while preparing you for the responsibilities of becoming a full Instructor.

Develop the skills required to teach and supervise divers.
The course combines teaching theory, workshop-based training, confined water instruction, open water supervision, and professional-level presentations. You’ll progressively move from assisting instructors toward independently managing selected teaching responsibilities.
How the course works

Part of the Instructor Development Course (IDC).
The Assistant Instructor course forms the first major section of the PADI Instructor Development Course. During this process, you begin learning how to teach major PADI programs including Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster courses.
You’ll also develop professional-level organization, supervision, and risk management skills required during real dive operations.
A deeper understanding of dive theory and instruction.
The academic portion of the course includes both independent eLearning and instructor-led workshops covering dive theory, the PADI educational system, risk management, confined water training, open water teaching techniques, student evaluation methods, and professional dive operations.
This course is perfect if…
- You want to move beyond Divemaster into professional teaching development
- You want to become more involved in student supervision and instruction
